Garner is a growing town of about 27,000 residents in the south eastern part of Wake County about seven miles from the downtown of the Capitol, Raleigh. The town has a historic downtown district, business parks and is home to the ever expanding White Oak Shopping Center, home to the first Cabela’s in the State of North Carolina. The Town of Garner is about 15 square miles but the mailing address of the town extends from Raleigh to Clayton in Johnston County. It is home to many wonderful neighborhoods both small and large. The town is known for it’s small town charm and friendly residents where the Friday night high school football games are packed. While the town continues to grow, there are still lots of land still used for farming and the town has over 350 acres of parkland for residents and visitors. In 2013 the town was named to the All American Cities List by the National Civic League.
History of Garner
Garner got its start when the North Carolina Railroad was built in the 1850’s when it was chosen for a station on the rail line that ran from Goldsboro to Charlotte. By 1878 a post office was needed and the town was incorporated as Garner’s Station. The area began to prosper and grow and in 1905 a railroad depot was established and became a hub taking passengers to Raleigh and shipping cotton. The town was reincorporated as the Town of Garner. There are documented records of a church south go Garner dating to the year 1756.

The public schools for residents of the Town of Garner in Wake County are administered by the Wake County Public School System. The restaurant and shopping scene in Garner is going through a growth spurt as we write this community page with multiple new restaurants in Garner and many new retail stores of every persuasion. The White Oak Shopping Center at the intersection of Hyw 70 and I 40 has moved into new phases adding stores, hotels and restaurants.The Center is home to the 14 screen Regal Cinema along with national retailers Best Buy, T J Maxx, BJ’s, Kohl’s and Michaels. The national outdoor enthusiast store Cabela’s opened to much fanfare in the Spring of 2015, the first store in North Carolina. A hugely popular attraction which will draw customers from all over the state and beyond and to cater to the crowds at least five new restaurants will be opening in Garner. Carolina Ale House, City Barbecue, Five Guys Burger and Fries, Longhorn Steakhouse, Panera Bread are building stores are have applied for permits and should be open soon. The Garner Performing Arts Center is located in the auditorium of the old Garner High School located in Downtown and presents shows and productions at affordable prices and also offers theater camps in the summer for ages 5-11 and 12-19.
