Smithfield, NC: Expect Great Things!
The town of Smithfield is a historic and enchanting community that has roots dating back to 1759. This community got its start when John Smith (an original settler) petitioned to operate a ferry on the Neuse River. That site would later become known as Smith’s Ferry.
The land around that ferry continued to grow over the decades and eventually became what we know as modern-day Smithfield.
Today, this community is home to a thriving local economy and a distinctive community identity. For instance, a 50-acre area called the Commons along the Neuse River was originally designated in 1777 and still exists today. This public park is even part of the Mountains to Sea Trail and features a 3-mile greenway.
Although agriculture was one of the main reasons for the town’s growth in the past, increased urbanization seems to be its future.
This community also has a strong future in community and civic organizations. Here are just some of the organizations you can be a part of when you live in Smithfield: American Legion, Progressive Men’s Club, Progressive Women’s Club, Selma Lion’s Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Benson Foundation for the Arts and more.
