Historic Home in Smithfield, NC
I was at a closing for one of my listings in Smithfield and on the way out of town I spotted this old house next to the Neuse River with a Civil War Trails marker. This is the Hastings House built in 1854 and served as headquarters for General Joseph E. Johnston, Commander of the Confederate troops that fought the Union Army of General Sherman at the Battle of Bentonville, March 19-21 1865.
Hastings House in Smithfield, NC
The house was built for a William Hastings and was originally located at 2nd and Johnston Streets and has been moved twice since, it has stood in its present position since 1965, just up the road from the Neuse Little Theatre. It is one of the two oldest homes in Smithfield, North Carolina.
Old Southern Homes
There is always something to stop and look at as you drive through towns in the south, an old mill, restored warehouse or historically significant building. The character of older homes, the materials used and the layout is very interesting to me and a nice change to the many homes I see today.
