Update: This development is on hold at this time.
2500 lot Proposed Subdivision In Clayton,NC
The Town of Clayton, North Carolina could become a lot bigger soon as a major development is on the horizon. Wakefield Development Company has submitted a proposal for a 2500 lot subdivision to be called Steeplechase on the land know locally as the Earp Land. The magnificent piece of property is about 660 acres of some of the nicest land around. Rolling hills, woods and a large pond can be seen from Covered Bridge Road one of the roads adjacent to the property.
Brookhill Steeplechase Punters Give Way To New Residents
I’m sure it’s no accident that the name Steeplechase was chosen as the land was for almost 15 years the site of the Brookhill Steeplechase. Held on the first Saturday in May, same day as the Kentucky Derby, the Brookhill was organised by the Raleigh Jaycees. The Jaycees held the event as a fundraiser for the many projects they undertake each year. It was a huge event with more than 15,000 people attending the races. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking what is going on here in Clayton? These folks took their tailgating seriously with bourbon tents and BBQ cookers, wide brimmed hats and mint juleps. Officially sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association the horses and jockeys competed for big prizes throughout the day, the winners racing past the wooden grandstand which is still out there today.
Developer Of Wakefield Plantation Coming To Clayton
Steeplechase the subdivision in it’s master plan has a combination of single family homes, town homes, condominiums, a commercial center, a clubhouse and there is land set aside for a school. The developer Wakefield Development Company is responsible for some of the nicer community developments in the Triangle. Wakefield Plantation a golf course community with homes from the $140’s to $4 million. Renaissance Park an urban living community just outside downtown Raleigh where homes sell for $140,000-$400,000. The multiple award winning community Bedford at Falls River in North Raleigh where homes sell for $200,000-$1 million. A development of this size will require plenty of input from different agencies and new traffic improvements which will be examined in a traffic study.
Where Is The New Development Going To Be?
If you are unsure of where the Earp Land is located as you cross over the Neuse River on Covered Bridge Road heading towards Clayton at the top of the hill the road splits, right for Covered Bridge and left for O’Neill St this is where the property starts. As you drive along Covered Bridge Road on the left you will see the pond and the current residents… some lovely black cows!
Growth For Johnston County
There will surely be some discussion as to what effect a development this size has on a town like Clayton potentially adding a third of the towns current population when it is complete. What is undeniable and I have been saying this for years is that Clayton, Archer Lodge and Johnston County are going to grow and grow quickly as land becomes more and more scarce in Raleigh, Cary and Wake County and prices rise accordingly. Developers and home buyers have seen the opportunities just to the east. It is quality well thought out developments that help to take an area to the next level in it’s growth and this company appears to have a track record for that.
