There was plenty of excitement in Clayton on Wednesday when the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk announced it was going to spend $1.85 billion dollars building a new plant near it’s current manufacturing plant location. The company plans to hire 700 new workers over the next five years with jobs paying an average of almost $70,000 a year in manufacturing and engineering. Novo Nordisk’s plant is located on Powhatan Road just off Hwy 70 on the outskirts of Clayton. The new facility will manufacture insulin products to meet the worldwide demand for its diabetes medicine.
Representatives were on hand from the Town of Clayton, Johnston County and The State of North Carolina and included Governor Pat McCrory, Mayor Jody McLeod, the Johnston County Board of Commissioners and
members of the ClaytonTown Council. With so many dignitaries on hand to listen to the announcement by Novo Nordisk President of U.S. Operations, Jesper Høiland it is clear that this is huge deal for not only Johnston County and the town of Clayton but the entire state of North Carolina.

The construction of the plant alone could employ upwards of 2000 construction workers and is expected to be completed in 2020 when the company will start the production lines. This new facility will firmly place Clayton and Johnston County at the center of the bio-manufacturing industry as it joins the current facility of Novo Nordisk and Grifols a global health care company that is a leader in the production of plasma derived medicines.
